Biography

Born in 1930 in Gastonia, North Carolina, Thomas Sowell grew up in poverty. His father passed away before he was born. His great-aunt and her daughters adopted him after his mother, a housemaid with four children, was unable to care for him. His mother passed away shortly after giving birth to another child.

He did not spend a lot of time with white people growing up. He resided in a little house in Charlotte, North Carolina, without water or electricity. At nine, he moved with his family to Harlem, New York, searching for a superior life. Arguments kept him from being with his family all the time.

After being accepted into a famous New York high school, he was forced to leave at the age of 17 due to financial difficulties and frequent arguments in his family. He tried to play baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers and played various small jobs. Because of the Korean Conflict, he had to enter the military in 1951. Despite bigotry and his disapproval of the war, he loved being a photographer. 1952 saw him leave the military.

He worked numerous part-time jobs while in his school. He was an assistant professor at Cornell University in 1965. Thomas has been granted permission to teach at several prominent universities, which has made him a very effective economics teacher. He held positions at the University of California, Amherst College, and Howard University.

Since 1980, he has served as the Hoover Institution at Stanford University’s Senior Fellow. Additionally, he has had the privilege of appearing as a guest on several renowned shows, including William F. Buckley Jr. He was the Urban Institute’s Project Director in 1974.

Writing thirty years later, Sowell described the black Cornell students who took over Willard Straight Hall in 1969 in a “violent” manner, calling them “hoodlums” who “seriously academically failed and were admitted under lower standards.” He also wrote, “It just so happened that the widespread racism that black students were allegedly subjected to at every turn on campus and in the community was not evident to me during the four years that I taught at Cornell and lived in Ithaca.”

Furthermore, Sowell made multiple appearances on William F. Buckley Jr.’s program Firing Line, where he spoke about the economics of privatization and race. During the hearings for Robert Bork’s nomination to the United States Supreme Court in 1987, Sowell provided testimony in support of the judge of the Federal Appeal Court. As an originalist and textualist, Bork rejected the idea of judicial activism, but Sowell said in his testimony that Bork was “the most highly qualified nominee of this generation” and that it “has not been beneficial to minorities.” Larry D. Nachman, writing for Commentary magazine, characterized Sowell as a prominent figure in the Chicago School of Economics during a book review in 1987.
